Embrace Your Path: Go With the Flow

August 14, 20262 min read

Today's blog post comes from the devotional book, A Year of Hope, and features my friend Amy Duckworth. Amy and I have collaborated on two writing projects to date, and I so enjoyed what she had to say in today's devotional. Her concept of growing in God by jumping into the flow goes so well with what we believe at The Rippling Brook - Faith creates ripples of hope. Just ride the ripple and see what God has in store!

Embrace Your Path, Go with the Flow
By Amy Duckworth
Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 43:18–19

This passage asks us to let go of our past. While we will not forget the events, they are merely waypoints that leave a mark on our life map.

Instead, we can focus on the endpoints and the goal, that “something new.” We are assured that a new plan is being forged for us. God hypes us up for what is to come. We are called to see this new pathway presented in the form of a river. Rivers carve new paths, often finding routes of least resistance but always moving forward. We can grow by jumping into the flow of the river. God has created a new path for us to flow in and gain strength to move forward.

I let go of the belief that my unshared ideas and words would grow stagnant and stuck within my journals. My “something new” came in the surge and flow of words and paint on the paper. I now know that these are my modes of creating, which helped me connect with my creator. I continue to learn and grow on this creative path, following the flow wherever it takes me.

Put this into action by taking out a sheet of paper. At the bottom of the paper, write something you would like to let go of. At the top of the paper, write down something new. Maybe you write about a thing you were.

Fold the sheet in half. Tear the bottom off, crumple it, and let it go by placing it in the trash. Use a marker, pencil, or pen to draw a new path along the edge of the curved or jagged tear. This symbolizes your new path. You had no control over how the tear would move, but your marking tool was able to follow it. May you mark your path and grow with the flow you are destined to follow forward.

Prayer

I pray that I can honestly let go of the past and accept the new path that God has given me. While I may have created my own path, please allow me to see the way forward that is not always designed by me. As these two paths converge, I pray that I can embrace my purpose for doing and stay afloat in the flow of the river path moving forward. Let go and know we can grow and flow with God.
